When Is the Best Time to Book Your Maternity Session?
f you’re expecting and thinking about maternity photos, one of the first questions you might have is when to book your session. It’s a common question, and getting the timing right can make all the difference in how you feel and how your photos turn out.

The Ideal Window
The best time to schedule your maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, most expecting parents have a visible baby bump but are still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session. Your belly has that beautiful round shape, but you’re not quite at the point where everything feels like extra effort.
Everyone’s body and experience are different, so these numbers aren’t set in stone. Some clients feel amazing at 36 weeks, while others prefer to take their photos closer to 27 weeks before any swelling or discomfort sets in.

Why Booking Early Matters
Even if you plan to take your photos in the third trimester, it’s smart to book your session as early as the end of your first trimester or early in your second. Maternity photographers often book out months in advance, especially in busy seasons like spring and fall. Booking early gives you more flexibility to choose a date that fits your schedule and ensures you have time to plan your wardrobe and location.

What Happens If You’re Booking Late?
It’s totally okay. Life gets busy, and sometimes maternity photos are a last-minute thought. I’ve photographed plenty of beautiful sessions at 36 or even 38 weeks. The key is keeping the session relaxed and easy. A simple location, comfortable outfit, and a flexible mindset go a long way.

A Note for Twin or High-Risk Pregnancies
If you’re carrying multiples or have a high-risk pregnancy, you may want to schedule your session a bit earlier, around 24 to 28 weeks. This helps ensure we can document your journey while you’re still feeling up to it.

Final Thoughts
Maternity photos are not just about showing your bump. They’re about pausing to honor the season you’re in. Whether it’s your first or your fourth baby, this time deserves to be remembered.
If you’re unsure what timing is best for your session, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to chat and help you pick the right time based on how you’re feeling and what kind of photos you’re dreaming of.
