Tips for older siblings at newborn sessions
One of my favorite things about my job is watching kiddos grow up through my lens. I did this little man’s newborn session two years ago and popped back over to see their brand new house and meet little sis! This couple is so great at decorating and it always a pleasure to photograph such a well put together space!
What to expect
You really never know what you are going to get, interaction wise, with big sister and brothers and their brand new siblings. Normally, kiddos in the 18 months-3 year old range take a little bit of time to warm up. Sometimes they run in and out the room watching me and bringing me toys. Sometimes they are very nervous to get too close the new babies, other times they want to sit on the baby! You really never know. This little man was such a trooper with his baby sister. He hopped right on the bed and wanted snuggle with her. That is NOT the norm.
Preparing older kiddos
When you are preparing for your newborn session, I understand it a be a stressful time trying to get everyone ready! The best way to prepare your older child is to tell them when the photo lady gets to the house, they will get a chance to snuggle on mom and dad’s bed! I never create an environment where we are battling the wills of a 2 or 3-year-old. When something doesn’t work, we try something else. The most important thing parents can do is stay calm and just laugh off any silly behavior. It is a totally new thing to your kiddo to have me in their space photographing them and their brand new siblings. Sometimes it makes them nervous and they react by acting extra silly or extra whiny. Do not worry! This is all super normal 🙂 Just make sure they are fed and I will do the rest!
